Moosehead Lake

Moosehead Lake is huge and breathtaking, and one of the best ways to see it is by seaplane. Three seaplane companies operate out of Greenville and Greenville Junction, at the southernmost tip of the lake. We took a ride with Roger the Pilot, who flies with Currier's Flying Service. Six of us plus Roger piled into his 1954 De Haviland Beaver for an hour-long search for moose. Takeoff was smooth at about 60 knots, and the lake was at an altitue of almost 1100 feet. We flew over the lake to look for moose in the adjoining ponds, and Roger spotted our first moose in the first ten minutes. There he was, standing in the place where two streams converged, about 300 feet below. We went on to spot another dozen or so moose, standing in ponds, mostly eating. A great way to see Maine and Maine moose!
