Ellsworth

We're going to start at Ellsworth, which is the seat of Hancock County, on the lovely Union River between Bangor and Bar Harbor. During the 19th century, Ellsworth was a bustling port, but its riches were tied to the ship-building/wood industry, and the town lost its luster by the turn of the century. The great flood resulting from a dam break in1923 destroyed most of the pretty town, and a huge fire iten years later destroyed most of the remaining buildings. Only a a small portion of downtown Ellsworth retains any character at all. The rest of Ellsworth looks like Route One Anywhere, with strip malls, McDonald's, and restaurants.

Most people think there aren't any good reasons to stop in Ellsworth, but there are several excellent reaons indeed. Ellsworth isn't just the Gateway to Downeast Maine and Acadia National Park -- there is a quaint underside to this place, along with one of the best places to eat in the entire State of Maine.

It's called Jordan's Snack Bar. That's right. This is one snack bar you're not going to want to miss. Are you ready for the best fried fish sandwich you've ever tasted?
